Electrical Muscle Stimulation FAQs

If you are looking for a non-invasive way to relieve your neck or back pain, our team at Boyd Chiropractic Center is here for you. We often see patients suffering from ongoing pain and weakness due to soft tissue injuries. That's why our Castle Rock clinic offers electrical muscle stimulation therapy (EMS). We can use this therapy to naturally alleviate your pain or discomfort and prevent it from reoccurring. Here are some common questions we receive about EMS and how this therapy can help.

.

What exactly is electrical muscle stimulation?

EMS uses tiny electrical pulses administered to the back, shoulders, or any other area of the body that requires muscle stimulation. These electrical currents mimic the signals coming from neurons, causing the muscles to gently contract and release. This therapy also helps improve blood flow to the affected area, helping to heal the injured muscles and tissue. Electrical muscle stimulation can be administered for a few minutes or for as long as twenty to thirty minutes for greater muscle stimulation. The strength of the stimulation can be raised or lowered, and the duration can also be adjusted to keep the patient's comfort in mind throughout the process.

Why is electrical muscle stimulation used?

EMS is an excellent way to reduce muscle pain and tension. The contraction of the muscle fibers essentially blocks signals from pain receptors in the nerve fibers from reaching the brain, reducing the sensation of pain. The movement of the muscles confuses the nerves so that they can't feel pain while they're busy contracting.

I've heard that EMS induces higher endorphin production. Is that true?

There are multiple studies confirming transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation can increase endorphin release. It is a highly respected non-pharmacological way to reduce pain in athletes or those who have been injured in a car wreck.

Does EMS improve muscle performance in athletes or those training?

Multiple studies show that electrical muscle stimulation can help muscles recover faster from workouts and reduce post-workout inflammation. Many professional athletes use this tool to recover faster.
