Spinal Decompression FAQs

Many of Dr. David Boyd's clients have questions about manual spinal decompression, which may help relieve conditions such as bulging disks and herniated disks, as well as neck pain, back pain, and spinal injuries. We perform this procedure at Boyd Chiropractic Centers in Castle Rock and have prepared these FAQs to help you better understand the service.

What Is Manual Spinal Decompression?

This technique relieves pressure from your spinal discs. Dr. Boyd does a quick stretch and release that helps reshape the spine and deliver nutrients to a herniated disk and or bulging disc. This releases pinched nerves that can cause neck and back pain. The doctor positions you on a padded table and stabilizes your hips. After locking your position, he quickly pulls the top of the spine. This move stretches and releases all the vertebra.

What Conditions Does This Treat?

If you have a bulging disk or herniated disk, spinal decompression helps with the healing process. It also alleviates the symptoms associated with neck pain, sciatica, back pain and spinal injury and may even help with headaches.

How Does it Work?

Manual decompression therapy takes the pressure off shock-absorbing discs. A spinal injury or another health issue may damage your discs and prevent them from cushioning the spine — this may cause severe back and neck discomfort and pain. Dr. Boyd creates vacuum pressure that stimulates fresh circulation to the discs. In turn, this reshapes it into a healthy position. Once the disc is reshaped, the pinched nerve can heal, providing relief from pain without drugs or surgery.

Is Spinal Decompression Combined with Other Chiropractic Care?

Spinal and body alignment takes a multifaceted approach. After an injury or illness, you may need further chiropractic care to realign vertebra that aren't in the correct position. Some patients may need additional sessions and other treatments to maximize their treatment plan. Dr. Boyd may also recommend lifestyle changes such as better nutrition and more exercise.

Who Is a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

Spinal decompression is recommendable for most clients. You first go through an exam and provide your medical history. Be sure to tell the chiropractor about any conditions you have that impact your eligibility for spinal decompression in Castle Rock. For example, it might not be the best decision for those who are pregnant or obese or for clients with advanced osteoporosis.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

How many sessions you need varies by individual. Long-term relief typically follows after 4-8 sessions.
